Setting Yourself up for Sober Success

The New Year gives you a chance to meditate on the last 365 days of your life and consider what you want to do differently in the year ahead. Here are 7 ways to have a stronger recovery in 2025.

1. Give Yourself Time and Space

Carve out thirty minutes to focus solely on reflecting on the past year. Set aside any distractions—turn off your phone and find a quiet place. Use this time to think deeply about your recovery journey and how the year unfolded. Grab a pen and paper, and jot down your thoughts.

2. Identify the Strengths You’ve Built

While it’s easy to focus on the struggles, it’s essential to recognize the positive aspects of your recovery. List the qualities you’ve developed over the past year. What strengths have emerged in your ability to stay honest, patient, or supportive of others? How have you grown in your capacity for resilience and calmness? Acknowledge these strengths as key milestones in your progress.

3. Acknowledge One Achievement in Every Area of Your Life

Reflect on various parts of your life, and identify at least one accomplishment in each area. Did you secure a safe, sober living environment or leave behind a toxic situation? Did you make new, supportive friendships or distance yourself from harmful relationships? Perhaps you achieved financial stability, found a job, or set a practical budget. If you find it challenging to identify these wins, consider reaching out to someone who’s been part of your recovery, such as a therapist or counselor, to help you recognize your successes.

4. Recognize Your Assets

Take stock of what you have going for you in recovery. This isn’t just about tangible things but also about the resources that support your well-being. Do you have a strong support system of friends or family? Perhaps you have a dedicated therapist or life coach who’s been helping you navigate your journey? Listing your resources will help you see the value in what you already have and encourage a sense of gratitude.

5. Reflect on 2024, Month by Month

Go through each month of the past year and recall the specific challenges you faced in your recovery. Was staying sober on New Year’s Day difficult?
