Helpful Resources for Drug Addiction

There are many helpful resources available for you to get assistance with drug addiction. One place you may be able to go is a benefit that many companies that provide health insurance offer. It’s called an EAP or Employee Assistance Program. It usually costs little or nothing and the trained counselors in those programs can help you with just about any problem you have including drug addiction. They help employees and their immediate families deal with personal problems that might negatively impact their work performance, health and well-being. Of course, there is always the internet; a vast resource for addicts and alcoholics.

The internet contains comprehensive websites of many government and non-profit agencies that deal with drug abuse. Most of the sites house a plethora of information, publications and suggestions on when and how to receive assistance for a drug addiction.

National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)

The mission of this organization is to bring the power of science to help with drug abuse and addiction. They conduct research and support across a broad range of scientific disciplines. They also distribute the research results quickly to improve prevention and treatment of drug abuse and addiction.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)

This organization covers topics from drug abuse to recovery and everything in-between. Their site contains hot line phone numbers for those in distress. They also publish pamphlets like SAMHSA’s Working Definition of Recovery. This publication introduces a recovery definition along with 10 guiding principles to help advance recovery opportunities.

Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA)

This organization is a non-profit that represents the makers of over the counter medications. They are actively engaged in raising awareness about teen medicine abuse. Their site includes bi-lingual brochures, outreach to pediatricians and much more.

The National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors (NASADAD)

This non-profit fosters and supports effective alcohol and drug abuse prevention and treatment programs in each state. The website hosts resources related to alcohol/drug abuse treatment, prevention and public policy.

National Council on Patient Information and Education (NCPIE)

This is a collection of consumer, patient advocacy, government and public health organizations. Part of their mission is to inform healthcare professionals and the public about safe medicine via better communications. Their latest program is a resource kit for addressing prescription medicine abuse on college campuses.

Partnership for a Drug Free America

This non-profit aims to unite parents, scientists and communications professionals to help families raise healthy children. They offer tools on the latest research on teen behavior, addiction and treatment.

Other Resources

If you check out your state and local websites, they most likely will also have some resources you will be able to tap into. There may even be some low cost programs available to residents. Commercial drug detox and rehab programs are also available in almost any community to discuss how to get treatment for an addiction.
