Partial Hospitalization Program for Addiction Treatment
About Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
Every person’s addiction treatment needs are different.1 Partial hospitalization programs, or PHPs, represent the most intensive form of outpatient substance use disorder treatment in which patients live at home and attend many hours of treatment during the day.2 This provides addiction treatment resources coupled with flexibility.
Often referred to “day treatment,” our partial hospitalization program near Miami, FL involves addiction treatment sessions that take place between 9 am and 4 pm between 5 and 7 days per week, depending on the patient’s needs and availability.
In a PHP at Recovery First’s Hollywood, FL outpatient rehab facility, patients may participate in several therapeutic and counseling activities including, but not limited to, the following:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – Patients work with clinical staff to challenge faulty and unhelpful patterns of behavior that underlie their substance use disorders. CBT is also a common treatment method for other mental disorders like depression and anxiety because it has been found to be so successful in changing behavior.4
- Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) – Practiced in a group or individual setting, DBT aims to change negative behavior patterns through applying a logical style of discussion that emphasizes emotion and mindfulness intervention.5
- Family therapy – Family members of the patient participate in a family-centered therapy program to address complex family dynamics that can contribute to harmful substance use. Family members learn how to adjust negative dynamics and support their loved one to reduce the risk of relapse.6
- Psychoeducation – Covering a range of topics, like the relationship of grief/loss and substance use psychoeducation strives to teach patients about the treatment options, progression, signs and symptoms, long-term outcomes, myths and misconceptions, and origins of substance use disorders.7
- Motivational interviewing (MI) – Patients work with a clinician to increase self-generated motivation to change. The goal of MI is to build the internal motivation to recover from addiction.8
In our Hollywood, Florida PHP, therapies may be utilized in both group and individual settings, providing comprehensive treatment resources.
When exploring if a PHP is right for you or your loved one, it is important to also consider your or your loved one’s current home environment. Since patients live at home while participating in a partial hospitalization program, it is crucial to have a supportive and safe home environment.3 If you or your loved one does not have a safe or supportive home environment, our inpatient rehab program in Hollywood, FL may be a preferred option. If you still want to participate in an outpatient drug and alcohol rehab program but need a safe residence, you may be able to stay in a sober living home near Miami and attend formal treatment during the day.
What Is the Difference Between a PHP and Intensive Outpatient Addiction Treatment?
Partial hospitalization programs and intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) are both flexible treatment options that don’t require you to stay at our outpatient treatment facility in Hollywood, FL. The two main differences between PHPs and standard outpatient are intensity of services and time commitment.2
IOPs require about 9 hours per week minimum, while partial hospitalization programs can require 20 hours per week minimum. Furthermore, partial hospitalization programs are more rigorous and offer more intensive care that is a closer match to what may be offered in residential programs.
Since an IOP requires fewer weekly treatment hours in a less intensive program, many individuals use it as part of a “step-down” process after completing a PHP to make transitioning back into daily life a smoother process.2
Many health insurance plans cover partial hospitalization programs. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), substance use disorders are now included as an essential health benefit in all marketplace plans in Florida, and coverage is expanded in many insurance plans outside the marketplace as well.9
Coverage varies by individual plans and whether or not the insurance is in-network. If you are unsure what your insurance coverage for addiction treatment is, fill out this to verify your benefits with Recovery First.
How Much Does PHP Rehab Cost Without Insurance?
Costs for PHP rehab varies based on several factors, including length of time in the partial hospitalization program, type of services obtained, and location. A PHP can be a cost-effective method of addiction treatment because it has been found to be similar to inpatient drug and alcohol addiction treatment programs in regard to behavioral therapy services offered, but without the additional expense of living at the facility.
If you are uninsured, don’t let that stop you from seeking help. Our PHP rehab staff work with each individual to find ways to pay for addiction treatment that work for you.
