Recovery First Treatment Center Celebrates Certified Nurses Day
March 19th is designated as Certified Nurses Day™, a day in which nurses who earn and maintain the highest credentials in their area of specialty are honored worldwide.
The staff at Recovery First Treatment Center joins certification boards, education facilities, healthcare employers and providers in celebrating nurses who contribute to better patient outcomes through board certification.
How Did Certified Nurses Day Begin?
March 19th is the birthday of Dr. Margretta “Gretta” Madden Styles, RN, EdD, FAAN, a leader in the field of nursing certification. In the 1970s, Dr. Styles recognized the critical importance of credentialing and developed the first comprehensive study of nurse credentialing. In the 1980s, she led the International Council of Nurses’ regulation work, and was the driving force behind the creation of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
Seventy groups participated in the very first Certified Nurses Day, including the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification, National Organization for Competency Assurance, and American Nurses Credentialing Center.
Why Is Professional Certification Important?
Healthcare is ever-changing. Staying current in the various areas of patient care is critical in the field of nursing. Professional certification affirms advanced knowledge, practice, and skill to meet the challenges of modern nursing, according to the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
Obtaining the highest credentials in a specialized area of nursing is voluntary, but board certifications demonstrate to patients and employers a high-level of expertise. Whether it’s a first-time certification, a change in specialty area or promotion, or professional development, there are many certification options.
The ANCC offers the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (Across the Lifespan) Certification, Adult-Gerontology ACUTE Care Nurse Practitioner Certification, Informatics Nursing Certification, and Family Nurse Practitioner Certification, among others.
How Is Certified Nurses Day Celebrated?
The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) offers creative ways to celebrate certified nurses to emphasize the value of certification:
- Display posters in your unit or facility.
- Organize a team event.
- Give a heartfelt thank you card.
- Post a social media message.
- Encourage professional growth by offering certification to your department or team.
