Outpatient drug and alcohol rehab is a type of substance use disorder treatment in which patients attend a program during the day while continuing to live at home.1 Outpatient treatment programs may be appropriate for someone who does not require 24-hour care, or who is transitioning out of a more intensive level of addiction treatment.
Substance use disorder is a chronic disease that is treatable with the right care and support.2 During outpatient treatment programs, patients attend program sessions that vary in format and purpose. Some sessions may involve group or individual therapy to address negative behavior and thought patterns. Others may be focused on certain skills training such as setting boundaries in relationships. Still others may be classes designed to educate participants about the disease of addiction and drugs.

Types of Outpatient Addiction Treatment Programs
To meet the needs of each individual patient, Recovery First provides the following levels of outpatient care at our rehab facility near Miami, FL:
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) – A partial hospitalization program for addiction is an outpatient offering that is similar in intensity to the care and services offered in inpatient treatment programs.3 The PHP occurs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and takes place 5-7 days a week, depending on your treatment needs. This clinical program includes individual and group therapy along with skills training for successful recovery.
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) – During intensive outpatient addiction rehab, patients participate in individual and group therapy to address underlying behavioral issues.1 Our intensive outpatient rehab program is offered both during the day and in the evenings. The daytime IOP takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and may be attended 3-5 days a week. The evening IOP is typically held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, with sessions running from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
It is very common for individuals to “step down” through the different levels of outpatient addiction treatment as their treatment needs transition from intensive treatment to disease management and aftercare.1
What’s the Difference Between Inpatient and Outpatient Addiction Treatment?
The difference between inpatient and outpatient addiction treatment is that inpatient addiction rehab requires patients to stay at the facility 24/7 whereas outpatient treatment does not require the patient to stay at the facility. Outpatient rehab usually involves fewer hours of treatment and is less intensive overall when compared with inpatient treatment. Because outpatient treatment does not involve room and board, it tends to be more affordable than inpatient treatment.
Our outpatient rehab program near Miami, FL can be a good option for individuals seeking treatment who have responsibilities at home that prevent them from being able to attend an inpatient treatment program. Because patients live at home while attending treatment during the day, it is important that patients have the following three things: 4
- Supportive family and friends.
- A stable living environment.
- Reliable transportation.
Inpatient addiction treatment may be a better option for individuals who do not have safe and supportive home situations because it provides a stable setting for treatment and one that removes many of the environmental triggers to use.2,4
The clinical staff at our Hollywood, FL rehab facility help each individual determine the best treatment plan for them, which includes deciding between inpatient and outpatient treatment.
