Drug Rehab: Understanding Drug Addiction Treatment Types

Drug rehab is most effective when it focuses on Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome and Denial Management via one of several different treatment types. These drug addiction treatment programs include inpatient rehab, intensive residential inpatient rehab, outpatient treatment and day/night treatment. Each drug rehab program is designed to address addiction and alcoholism at different levels, although most programs use similar therapies in order to achieve results. These therapies are the standard by which exceptional drug rehab centers are judged, and are offered by all four of the above types of drug addiction treatment:

1) Inpatient Drug Rehab

Inpatient drug rehab programs are generally 30 days in duration and consist of more than 60 hours of addiction therapies each week in the case of the most successful drug rehab centers in the country. Patients live in the same facilities where they receive treatment and are required to take care of themselves in an environment that is as true-to-life as possible.

Inpatient drug rehab centers provide comprehensive therapies to their patients in addition to medication management, group and social activities, and one on one counseling sessions with addiction professionals. In many cases an inpatient drug rehab program is followed by a step-down to a less intense form of treatment like day/night or outpatient treatment.

2) Intensive Residential Inpatient Treatment

Intensive residential inpatient treatment offers most of the same therapies and programs as inpatient drug rehab, but with a few key differences. First, these programs often offer more advanced, continued medical care and monitoring, in addition to 24 hour nurse care as available, for example, at Recovery First’s Florida drug rehab center.

3) Day/Night Treatment

Day/Night treatment offers a transitional level of treatment for those who have recently completed an inpatient drug rehab program, or for those who recently relapsed. During this type of drug and alcohol addiction treatment, patients attend intensive therapies during the day and retire to a supervised clean and sober living environment in the evenings. The same therapies are employed at a day/night treatment as those used by an inpatient drug rehab and include individual therapy, group counseling and in many cases, family therapy sessions.

4) Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient treatment is also considered a transitional type of treatment and is ideal for those who have recently completed an inpatient drug rehab or a day/night program. In some cases an outpatient program may be required as part of a court deal, or it may be deemed necessary after a short relapse.

During outpatient treatment patients attend the same intensive therapies utilized in other types of programs during the day and sometimes in the evening, at when not in therapy patients return to their homes.

These types of drug addiction treatment were specifically designed to offer a gradual approach to treatment that allows a recovering addict or alcoholic to progressively reintegrate with their communities while still having immediate access to the tools and resources that are made available by these programs. This is why reality therapy – employed by the most successful drug rehabs, is one of the most valuable tools for people in recovery.
