Drug Rehab for Adolescents

Addiction destroys the lives of teens, their parents and their friends, but drug rehab can help them turn their lives around before it’s too late. With proven therapies at clinical drug rehab centers, teens can learn to manage their cravings and interact positively with their peers – and with the adults in their lives. The addiction epidemic has had drastic effects on the US adolescent population, and it is now more important than ever for people to understand the treatments available. Parents, their addicted children, and even sober teens need to learn about the effective treatment methods used to ensure brighter futures for America’s young people.

Specialized Treatment Centers

Rehabilitation clinics across the country help addicts both young and old deal with their drug problems. However, addicted teens often attend treatment centers that cater specifically to the needs of minors. These clinics offer specialized counseling that address adolescents’ unique attitudes and rapidly-changing hormonal environments.

These specialized rehab centers also offer the most effective group therapies for teens. In other rehab clinics, group discussions allow addicts from all walks of life to share their coping strategies and give each other emotional support. However, teens often respond best – or only – to the advice of their peers.

Court-Ordered Drug Rehab

Some teens do not get help with their addictions before they are caught using drugs or drinking underage. Thankfully, judges will sometimes order adolescents to undergo rehabilitation instead of prison time or juvenile detention. Though some people disagree with non-volitional addiction treatment, research has shown it to be just as effective as voluntary rehab.

Residential Inpatient Programs

Teens that become severely addicted to opiates, alcohol, and other addictive drugs usually require the supervision and intensive therapy that only an inpatient program can provide. Inpatient rehab usually involves living at a clinic for thirty to ninety days. Patients receive fifty or more hours of individual counseling, reality therapy, and biofeedback during this time.

In some cases, teens who require the rigors of inpatient treatment will attend special boarding schools for addicts. These schools will allow adolescents to continue their class work while receiving the therapies they need to stay away from drugs for the rests of their lives.

Parental Support

Sadly, parents often act as enablers for their teens’ drug addictions. They may rationalize on behalf of their children, or they may give tacit approval of drug use to avoid conflict and rebellion. They may even buy drugs for their teens in attempts to keep them from getting caught by law enforcement.

For drug rehab programs to be truly effective, these adults must change their ways. As long as adolescents continue to live at home, their parents are the most influential people in their lives. They need to stand firm against future drug use – even if it means conflict and temporary emotional strife.
