Addiction Treatment: The Solution to Drug Addiction and Alcoholism
Addiction treatment should be sought the moment it becomes obvious that you or someone you love has a problem with alcohol or drugs. The longer you wait, the more likely it is that your life will spin out of control – with disastrous consequences. Alcoholics and addicts are typically not in reality about their lives and think that they need to wait until they “hit bottom.”
This is not true. This belief keeps them from getting the help they need soon enough to prevent further deterioration; they are waiting for a bottom that does not need to come.
Addiction is like an elevator that only goes down; you can choose to get off on any floor – before you hit the bottom. If you’re even considering whether you have a problem and need addiction treatment, you probably have already hit your first bottom.
Acting quickly by seeking addiction treatment is the key to minimizing and repairing any damage to your health, career, and relationships. The longer addiction prevails, the more these critical elements of your life will deteriorate and ultimately prolong active addiction. Even at the worst of times, few people have to be told that drug addiction can destroy everything in their lives and even end tragically in death. Ironically, what most people perceive as the hardest part of getting addiction treatment – reaching out for help – is often the easiest.
Changes in the way addiction treatment is perceived have radically altered attitudes about substance abuse and addiction. It has been well established that addiction is not a condition that is exclusive to any particular group of people – addiction can happen to anyone from park bench to Park Avenue, nor does it have any respect for age, race, religion, or nationality. Addiction can and does happen to people from all walks of life.

Description of Therapies:
*Group Therapy – This type of therapy allows people to share their experiences and thoughts with others who are also suffering from addiction. Group therapy helps to develop compassion and understanding, and to embrace the idea that you are not alone. These types of relationships will often later serve as the backbone of a support network – a critical factor in long term recovery.
**Individual Therapy – By having candid conversations with an addiction treatment specialist, underlying issues are uncovered and addressed. This helps patients to discover things about themselves that they may not have known, and uncover things that they may have been hiding.
***Family Therapy – Numerous studies have shown that patients who involve family members and loved ones in their drug addiction treatment process achieve much higher success rates. This is because drug addiction affects family members as much – and in some cases – even more than it affects the individual addict. Family therapy enhances the recovery process by building a bridge of core support between members; they each know that “we’re in this together” and in some cases, that makes a big difference.
